Although Fr. Makewa Foundation was incorporated in 2017, its operations go back over three decades under the humanitarian works of Father John Wambua Makewa.

Fr. John wambua makewa is from the Catholic Diocese of machakos, kenya. For over 30 years he has worked in only two semi Arid Arias, makuni and katangi-yatta. Due to his commitment and vision, Fr. Makewa was able to Baptise 36,000 people, initiate 9 waterbore holes,10 water Dams, constructed 3 high schools, 3 primary schools, and two Technical schools among others.

The Father, who served in Katangi and Makueni Parishes as the Father-in-charge was moved by the poor economic state and marginalization of the communities and the faithful who attended his Mass. Hailing from a very humble family, Fr. John Makewa was no stranger to hardships having overcome economic and social challenges due to backing of missionaries who had visited his home area to spread the gospel and introduce Christianity. He therefore set to outdo his best to make a positive difference in the lives of these communities.

Through a Community Based Organization (CBO) he worked with a team of committed persons to Sink Boreholes, built dams, establish education centers, built healthcare centers and connect these communities to the National Grid. One remarkable moment was in 1997 when President Moi (the second president of Kenya) visited him in in 1997 to witness electricity connection of Katangi Market also He invited President Kibaki in Makueni Parish and assisted in several projects (2005)

Fr. Makewa Foundation’s aim is to secure integrated development through people’s participation and develop lasting solutions to challenges faced by the communities and groups which we have worked with.

Fr. Makewa Foundation has come long way since April 2017 when it was incorporated and has implemented wide variety of projects related to education, poverty alleviation, Female Genital Mutilation, and Substance use Mitigation. We have always believed in the capacities and capabilities of the communities and have always strived to channel their hidden energies for the betterment of the society at large. The efforts of the organization have always been directed towards creating an environment that is conducive for enhancing opportunities for local people to think and act positively.

Our philosophy leads us to adopt a holistic and participatory approach to rural development and good Health.
